Local People. Independent Funeral Directors. Caring for Families Since 1921.

Plymouth Direct Cremations was created with a simple belief:

A simpler funeral should never mean a lower standard of care.

Wings divider

We provide affordable, dignified direct cremations for families throughout Plymouth and the surrounding communities, backed by the experience and reputation of Wedlake Funeral Home — Independent Family Funeral Directors since 1921.

We are not a national direct-cremation company, an anonymous call centre or a business transporting loved ones around the country to centralised facilities.

Behind Plymouth Direct Cremations are real funeral directors, a real funeral home and more than a century of funeral heritage.

The Funeral Home Behind Plymouth Direct Cremations

Wedlake Funeral Home – Established 1921

Our story begins long before direct cremation became the choice it is today.

Wedlake Funeral Home was established in 1921 and has been caring for families for more than a century.

Over those years, funerals have changed enormously.

What hasn't changed is what families need from their funeral director: kindness, honesty, dignity and someone they can trust to look after the person they love.

Today, Wedlake Funeral Home combines those traditional values with a modern approach to funeral care.

That same philosophy sits behind Plymouth Direct Cremations.

Experienced Funeral Directors With A Personal Approach

Today, Wedlake Funeral Home is led by David Michael and Nick Jago, who took over the business in 2017.

David Michael

Funeral directing has been part of David's life from an early age.

Coming from a funeral-directing family, David began working within the profession at just 16 years old and has built extensive experience caring for families and their loved ones.

That background has given David a deep understanding of both the traditional responsibilities of a funeral director and the changing ways families now want to say goodbye.

Nick Jago

Nick has spent more than a decade working within the funeral profession and shares the same belief that families deserve compassionate care, straightforward choices and transparent pricing.

Together, David and Nick have continued Wedlake's long-established tradition while also embracing new and simpler funeral choices for families who don't necessarily want a conventional funeral service.

Plymouth Direct Cremations is part of that evolution.

Why We Created Plymouth Direct Cremations

Wings divider
Funerals are changing.

For some families, a traditional funeral service at a crematorium remains exactly the right choice.

For others, it isn't.

Some people simply don't want a formal funeral.

Some would rather their family didn't face the expense of one.

Others want their cremation to happen quietly, allowing the people they leave behind to celebrate their life somewhere more personal and meaningful.

We believe those families deserve a genuinely local alternative to the large national direct-cremation companies.

That's why we created Plymouth Direct Cremations.

Our service combines the simplicity and affordability of direct cremation with something we believe matters enormously:

local, personal funeral care.

Simple Doesn't Mean Impersonal

Wings divider white

A direct cremation removes many of the elements associated with a traditional funeral.

There is no service at the crematorium, no procession of limousines and no requirement for mourners to attend.

But there are some things we don't believe should ever be removed.

Compassion.

Dignity.

Respect.

Personal responsibility for the person entrusted to our care.

Your loved one is not simply a booking number being processed through a national system.

They are someone's husband or wife, mum or dad, brother or sister, partner, relative or friend.

And that is how we treat them.

Keeping Your Loved One Local

Local Care Matters To Us

One of the most important differences between Plymouth Direct Cremations and some national direct-cremation providers is our commitment to local care.

Your loved one is brought into the care of an experienced funeral team and looked after locally.

When the time comes for their cremation, they make their final journey to a trusted local crematorium in a private funeral vehicle.

For many families, simply knowing where their loved one is and who is caring for them provides enormous reassurance.

We think that's important too.

Our Promise To The Families We Care For

There is a simple idea at the heart of the way we care for people.

We call it Leaving the Light On.

When somebody you love comes into our care, they matter to us.

They are cared for respectfully in a safe, homely environment from the moment they arrive until the time comes for their final journey.

Even when their family cannot be there, someone is still looking after them.

Direct cremation may remove the traditional funeral ceremony.

It should never remove the humanity from funeral care.

That's our promise.

Over 100 Years Of Experience – With A Modern Approach

Wings divider

Being established since 1921 doesn't mean believing funerals should always be done the way they were in the past.

Quite the opposite.

More than a century of funeral experience has shown us that every generation changes the way it says goodbye.

Plymouth Direct Cremations reflects what many families want today:

  • A simple funeral choice
  • A clear and affordable price
  • An independent funeral director
  • Local care for their loved one
  • No unnecessary extras
  • Freedom to create their own memorial afterwards
  • Someone available to talk to when they need help

Trusted By Families

Wings divider white

We understand that choosing who will care for someone you love requires trust.

Fortunately, you don't simply have to take our word for it.

Families already cared for by Wedlake Funeral Home have shared their experiences through independent reviews, describing the compassion, professionalism and personal attention they received from David, Nick and the team.

Plymouth Direct Cremations has been created with exactly those same standards of care.

Giving Families More Freedom To Say Goodbye

Wings divider

Direct cremation doesn't mean there can't be a funeral.

It means the cremation and the farewell don't have to happen at the same time.

Once your loved one's ashes have been returned, you can choose what happens next.

You might gather everyone somewhere they loved.

Hold a celebration of life.

Scatter their ashes by the sea or somewhere filled with memories.

Plant something in their honour.

Bring family together on their birthday.

Or simply spend time sharing photographs, stories, food and memories.

There is no rulebook.

There is only what feels right for your family.

Here When You Need Us

Wings divider

If somebody has died and you're considering direct cremation, you don't need to understand everything before calling us.

That's what we're here for.

We'll explain what happens next, answer your questions and help you decide whether Plymouth Direct Cremations is right for you.

There is no pressure and no obligation.
